Donor-Advised Funds

A GIVING VEHIcle to support the causes that matter most to you

Flexible. Convenient. Tax Savings.

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a giving vehicle within The Women’s Foundation of Colorado (WFCO) to support the causes and organizations that matter most to you.  A DAF enables you to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit and then recommend grants from the fund over time. You can contribute to multiple non-profits, leverage our expertise to fulfill your giving wishes, inspire the next generation, and build a legacy of philanthropy for your family.

It’s easy.

You can open your own donor-advised fund for as little as $2,500 with a simple agreement.  Your fund assets grow tax-free.  And, your contributions can take many forms -  cash, stock or other investment instruments.  You can also:

  • make contributions to your DAF at any time and receive an income tax charitable deduction in the year the gift is made
  • recommend grants to your favorite nonprofit organizations once your fund reaches $10,000
  • suggest others make gifts to your fund for your birthday or other special celebrations
  • name beneficiary advisors to extend philanthropy to the next generation.

Our expertise. Your passion.

We are here to help guide your giving, completing due diligence, gift verification, and remittances in a timely manner.  WFCO leverages our world-class financial stewardship to provide you with investment options for your DAF.  You can direct your investment to our gender-lens portfolio or our unitized pool.  Take advantage of our research, knowledge, and expertise to maximize your giving.

Build your philanthropic wealth and create positive impact.

Philanthropy from the Heart: Soeurs de Coeur

Sisterhood, as it’s often said, is powerful. When women join together around shared interests and common goals, uniting their many gifts, big things follow.

Soeurs de CoeurOver a decade ago, three women – Deb Luginbuhl, Lisa Pease, and Pamela Smith – met through WFCO’s Vail Valley Regional Committee. There, they created lifelong bonds and found kindred spirits in philanthropy.

“What really sealed our friendship was starting the Vail luncheon as an educational event in 2008,” said Pam. “The first year 200 people attended, and by 2016 we had more than 550.”

The women’s friendship blossomed alongside the event. All three went on to serve as chairs of the Vail Committee and as WFCO trustees.

“The Foundation brought the three of us together around our passion for women and girls,” explained Lisa. “Nearly 70 percent of all of those living in poverty are women and children - to us, that’s just not acceptable.”

In 2016, Pam, Lisa, and Deb decided the time was right to support the causes they care about in a new way. Together, the three women created a donor-advised fund (DAF) to be held at The Women’s Foundation of Colorado. A DAF, established with as little as $2,500, enables you to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit, and then recommend grants from the fund to multiple organizations over time.

“A donor-advised fund keeps us connected to each other and to the work of The Foundation,” said Lisa, who also shares a DAF with her brother designed to carry forward their mother’s philanthropic legacy. She continued, “Donor-advised funds give direct involvement with grants, as well as some flexibility.”

They named their fund Soeurs de Coeur. “We wanted the name of the fund to mirror how we felt about each other and the WFCO. The literal definition of the name from French to English - Sisters of the Heart - seemed perfect. It turned out that the French nuanced definition is True Women and that fit us even better. We are very true to WFCO,” said Deb, who recently relocated from Colorado to Georgia.

The first Soeurs de Coeur grantee was Project DIY, a summer program of the Community College of Denver that gives high school girls hands-on exposure to advanced manufacturing careers.

“WFCO vetted this program and invested in its first year, and so we were excited to co-invest with WFCO for the second year,” said Pam. “WFCO starts with research, and bases their grantmaking on what they’ve learned. That gives us strong confidence as donors.”

By partnering with WFCO to make this grant, Soeurs de Coeur tapped into WFCO’s existing grantmaking systems, gaining access to in-depth grant reports.

This first grant is only the beginning for Soeurs de Coeur. “Working on a donor-advised fund is something we can do together no matter what time zone we’re in. We’re excited to continue to have deep conversations about what we care about,” explained Pam.

Sue Anschutz-Rodgers“I appreciate having a donor-advised fund at The Women’s Foundation because it allows me to maintain an ongoing investment in helping women and girls achieve self-sufficiency.  It also reinforces  my philanthropic endeavors in supporting statewide needs for economically and physically challenged women and girls who do not know how to achieve their goals, especially in rural communities.”  - Sue Anschutz-Rodgers
